Muffler: Service and Repair
Removal
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Install the special tool onto the exhaust system flex tube.
3. Support the exhaust system with a suitable, jack stand.
4. Remove the track bar from the body.
5. Remove the exhaust hanger insulators.
6. Remove the muffler-to-flex tube clamp.
7. Note: It may be necessary to heat the muffler-to-exhaust system flex tube joint to ease removal.
Separate the muffler and tailpipe assembly from the exhaust system flex tube.
8. Remove the muffler and tailpipe assembly.
Installation
1. Position and support the muffler and assembly with a suitable jack stand.
2. Note: It may be necessary to heat the muffler-to-exhaust system flex tube joint to ease installation.
Install the exhaust system flex tube into the muffler and tailpipe assembly.
3. CAUTION: Do not use oil or grease based lubricants on insulators which deteriorates the rubber.
Note: To ease removal and installation of exhaust components, lubricate the insulators using Silicone Lubricant (Aerosol) F5AZ-19553-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M13P4-A.
Note: Make sure that the exhaust hanger insulators hang straight down. If they do not, adjust the depth that the exhaust system flex tube is inserted into the muffler and tailpipe assembly until they do.
Install the exhaust hanger insulators.
4. Install the exhaust system flex tube-to-muffler clamp.
^ Position the clamp.
^ Install the nuts.
^ Remove the special tool.
5. Install the track bar.
6. Remove the jack stand.
7. Lower the vehicle.
