Evaporative Emission Control Canister: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
WARNING: THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM CONTAINS FUEL VAPOR AND CONDENSED FUEL VAPOR. ALTHOUGH NOT PRESENT IN LARGE QUANTITIES, IT STILL PRESENTS THE DANGER OF EXPLOSION OR FIRE. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE FROM THE BATTERY TO MINIMIZE THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ELECTRICAL SPARK OCCURRING, POSSIBLY CAUSING A FIRE OR EXPLOSION IF FUEL VAPOR OR LIQUID FUEL IS PRESENT IN THE AREA.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
3. Loosen the clamps and remove the evaporative emission purge outlet tube.
^ Disconnect the canister vent solenoid electrical connector.
4. Remove the canister and bracket assembly.
5. If necessary, remove the retainer by sliding the retainer off the bracket.
6. Remove the evaporative emission canister vent solenoid.
NOTE:
^ Inspect and install new O-ring seals as necessary.
^ A twisting and pulling motion is necessary to remove the evaporative emission canister vent solenoid.
7. Remove the evaporative emission canister outlet elbow.
NOTE:
^ Inspect and install new O-ring seals as necessary.
^ A twisting and pulling motion is necessary to remove the inlet fitting.
8. Remove the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister.
1. Remove the bolt and mounting bracket.
2. Remove the evaporative emission canister.
INSTALLATION
1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

NOTE: Lubricate the O-ring seals with MERPOL(R) O-Ring Seal Lubricant or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M99B144-B.
