Oil Pan: Service and Repair

Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Drain the cooling system.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
4. Remove the fan shroud and fan assembly.
5. Remove the upper intake manifold.





6. Remove the bolt retaining the dipstick tube support bracket to the transmission converter housing.
7. Raise the vehicle.
8. Drain the oil pan.





9. Loosen the nuts.





10. Remove the nuts (left side shown, right side similar).





11. Remove the nuts (right side shown, left side similar).





12. Position a screw jack and a block of wood under the oil pan.

13. Note: If the engine is not raised at least 33 mm (13 inches), it will not be possible to remove the oil pan.





Raise the engine until the distance between the crankshaft damper and the bottom of the crossmember is at least 33 mm (13 inches).





14. Support the engine by placing blocks of wood between the engine mount bracket and the exhaust manifolds. Remove the screw jack and wood block from the oil pan.





15. Remove the bolt retaining the oil pan to the right side of the transmission converter housing.





16. Remove the bolts retaining the oil pan to the left side of the transmission converter housing.





17. Remove the remaining bolts and the oil pan. Remove and discard the oil pan seal.

Installation

1. Note: If the oil pan and rear oil seal are not installed within seven minutes, remove sealant and reapply.





Follow removal procedure in reverse order.
- Clean mating surfaces on the oil pan and the cylinder block.
- Use Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M513392-A.
- Apply a bead of Silicone Gasket and Sealant F7AZ-19554-EA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A4 as shown in the illustration.





2. Tighten the bolts in two stages in the sequence shown.
- Stage 1: 4 - 5 Nm (35 - 44 inch lbs.)
^Stage 2: 9 - 12 Nm (79 - 106 inch lbs.)
