Valve Spring: Service and Repair

Special Tools:






Removal
1. Remove the valve cover.





2. Rotate the crankshaft until the piston for the valve being worked on is at the top of its stroke with both the (A) intake valve and the (B) exhaust valve closed.
3. Hold the valve in the cylinder head.
- Remove the spark plug, if necessary.
- Apply a minimum of 965 kPa (140 psi) of compressed air to the cylinder.

CAUTION:
- If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same position. Mark the components for location.
- If a valve drops into the cylinder, remove the cylinder head.






4. Remove the rocker arms.
1. Remove the bolts.
2. Remove the rocker arms.





5. Use the Valve Spring Compressor to compress the valve springs.





6. Remove the following:
1. Remove the valve spring retainer key.
2. Remove the valve spring retainer.
3. Remove the valve spring.
4. Remove and discard the valve stem seal.
5. Remove the valve spring seat.
6. Secure the valve to keep it from dropping.
7. Inspect the components, if necessary.

Installation

1. CAUTION: Components removed should be marked for location. Make sure components are installed in the correct location.

Note: Lubricate parts with Super Premium SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specifications WSS-M2C153-G prior to assembly.





To install, reverse the removal procedure.
