Removal
1. Disconnect negative battery cable and move out of the way.2. Drain cooling system.
3. Remove clean air flex tube from throttle body and air cleaner.
4. Disconnect fuel lines.
5. Mark vacuum line location and remove lines.
6. Disconnect upper radiator and heater hoses and move out of the way.
7. Disconnect ignition control module electrical connector. Remove two coil retaining nuts and remove coil ignition control module.
8. Remove throttle body.
9. Mark distributor housing to block and note rotor position. Remove ignition wires from spark plugs and locating studs. Remove distributor.
10. If left cylinder head is being removed, perform the following:
a. Remove accessory drive belt.
b. Remove three power steering pump bracket attaching bolts and one nut. Remove pump, bracket and lines as an assembly. Place assembly aside in a position to prevent fluid leakage.
c. Remove engine oil dipstick tube attaching nut from exhaust manifold stud. Remove tube from manifold.
d. Remove fuel line retaining bracket bolt from front of cylinder head.
11. If right cylinder head is being removed, perform the following:
a. Remove accessory drive belt.
b. Disconnect alternator electrical harnesses.
c. Remove three belt tensioner bolts and remove assembly from vehicle.
d. Remove three alternator bracket and adjusting arm retaining bolts. Remove alternator I bracket assembly from vehicle.
e. Remove closure hose from rocker arm cover oil fill adapter.
12. Remove spark plugs.
13. Remove exhaust inlet pipe(s) and exhaust manifold(s).
14. Remove rocker arm covers.
15. Loosen rocker arm fulcrum retaining bolts enough to allow the rocker arm to be lifted off the push rod and rotated to one side.
NOTE: Regardless of which cylinder head is being removed, the No. 3 cylinder intake valve push rod must be removed to allow removal of intake manifold.
16. Remove push rods. Identify the position of each rod. The push rods should be installed in their original position during re-assembly.
17. Remove intake manifold.
18. Remove cylinder head retaining bolts.
19. Remove cylinder head(s).
20. Remove old cylinder head gasket(s) and discard.
