LIGHT TRUCK:
1993 EXPLORER

ISSUE:
The 1993 Explorer Limited Edition is equipped with an interior Electrochromatic rear view mirror. This article outlines the function, operation and diagnostic and prove-out procedures.

ACTION:
Refer to the following description for the function, operation and diagnostic and prove-out procedures for the new interior rear view mirror.

FUNCTION
The interior rear view mirror is equipped with the following special night convenience features.

^ GLARE CONTROL

^ AUTO LAMP with head lamp delay

OPERATION

GLARE CONTROL

This mirror is equipped with a glare control feature that automatically darkens the mirror to reduce glare from the headlamps of vehicles approaching from the rear. A forward-facing light sensor measures the outside light level and inhibits system operation until the rear-facing sensor detects glare.

When the rear facing light sensor (located in the upper right hand corner of the mirror surface) senses light from the rear, (glare) it energizes a chemical layer in the glass causing it to darken and absorb light to reduce glare.

There is a slight delay before returning to normal from the non-glare setting to prevent excessive changing of the mirror in traffic.

^ AUTO MIRROR system has an ON/OFF switch. A green LED in the center of the switch will light to indicate the AUTO MIRROR is on.

^ DIM switch can temporarily darken the mirror for 30 seconds. Depress the switch and a green LED in the DIM button will light. This LED will also light when AUTO MIRROR is controlling glare in the auto position. This indicator serves as a status that the mirror element is darkened to rearward glare.

AUTOLAMP with headlamp delay

^ AUTO LAMP DELAY allows the head lamps to remain on after the vehicle is parked and the ignition switch is off. The slider control delays the headlamp turn off time from 3.5 seconds, (full left position), to 3 minutes, (full right position).

^ AUTO LAMP switch turns the head lamp circuit ON or OFF. A green LED indicates when AUTO LAMP is ON.

^ Status indicator, (amber color), that the head lamps are being controlled by the mirror.

See Figure 1, System Schematic and Figure 2, Pinout/Colors for further information.

SETTING AUTO LAMP FOR EARLY ON OR LATER OFF

If the driver desires the headlamps to come on earlier when the sky is brighter or later when the sky is darker, the following procedure should be performed.

1. Set the slide control AUTO LAMP DELAY to the far left position with the vehicle in park and ignition in the run position.

a. Press simultaneously the mirror DIM and Auto Lamp ON switches.

b. The AUTO LAMP ON LED will flash, indicating the adjustment is ready to be made.

2. Slowly slide the AUTO LAMP DELAY control to the right until the DIM LED is on steady. This indicates the current setting for the early/late headlamp.

3. a. To change to EARLY ON, slide the AUTO LAMP DELAY control to the left. The DIM LED will start flashing, indicating the setting is being changed. The further left the control is moved, the earlier the headlamps will come on.

b. Pressing the AUTO LAMP switch will enter the new setting and return the mirror back to normal operation.

4.

a. To change to LATER ON, slide the AUTO LAMP DELAY control to the right. The DIM LED light will start flashing, indicating the setting is being changed. The further right the control is moved, the later the headlamps will come on.

b. Pressing the AUTO LAMP switch will enter the new setting and return the mirror back to normal operation.

MIRROR SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC PROVE-OUT

The Mirror Self Test and Wiring Diagnostics are designed to check the mirror assembly for proper function and properly connected external inputs and outputs.

MIRROR SELF TEST

1. Ignition in the off position.

2. Shift lever in PARK.

3. Push in all three switches, (Auto mirror "ON", "DIM" and Autolamp "ON") and hold for one (1) second.

4. All three switch LED indicators should be flashing but not the status indicator.

5. The green LED indicators will flash for 5 seconds. Then move to the following wiring diagnostics test.

NOTE:
IF THE PRECEDING CONDITION DOES NOT OCCUR, THEN POSSIBLY THE INPUT CONNECTION TO PIN 2 (221 CIRCUIT) OR PIN 3 (57 CIRCUIT) IS OPEN.

WIRING DIAGNOSTICS TEST The test automatically moves to Wiring Diagnostics Test:

1. After the 5 second test, the Auto Mirror "ON" and the Autolamp "ON" LED indicators will remain flashing.

2. Turn the ignition switch to the "RUN" position.

3. The Auto Mirror "ON" indicator will flash and the Autolamp "ON" and Status LED indicators will be on continuously.

4. Check headlights. They should be ON.

5. This segment will last 10 seconds before step 6 starts.

NOTE:
IF THIS CONDITION DOES NOT OCCUR, THEN POSSIBLY PIN 1 (640 CIRCUIT) IGNITION RUN CIRCUIT IS OPEN AND THE HEADLIGHTS ARE NOT ON, THEN PIN 5 (218 CIRCUIT) IS OPEN OR SHORTED.

6. After 10 seconds the Auto Mirror "ON" and "DIM" LED indicators will flash and the mirror will darken.

7. Place gear shift lever into REVERSE position.

8. All switch indicators will return to the OFF position.

NOTE:
IF STEP 6 DOES NOT OCCUR, THEN POSSIBLY PIN 4 (140 CIRCUIT) IS AT FULL BATTERY VOLTAGE. THIS CONDITION COULD POSSIBLY BE CAUSED BY THE TRANSMISSION BACK UP LIGHT SWITCH BEING SHORTED OR THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER NOT BEING FULLY ENGAGED INTO PARK.

NOTE:
IF STEP 8 DOES NOT OCCUR, THEN POSSIBLY PIN 4 (140 CIRCUIT) IS OPEN OR SHORTED TO GROUND VIA THE BACK-UP LAMPS.

NOTE:
IF ANY STEP IN THE WIRING DIAGNOSTICS TEST IS NOT STARTED WITHIN 30 SECONDS, THE MIRROR ASSEMBLY WILL AUTOMATICALLY TURN ALL FUNCTIONS OFF. FOLLOWING THE DIAGNOSTIC PROVE-OUT, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO PRESS THE "ON" SWITCH TO RETURN THE MIRROR TO FULL AUTOMATIC OPERATION.
