Installation

*** THIS ARTICLE REFLECTS CHANGES MADE BY TSB #94-18-10, DATED September 07, 1994

INSTALLATION

NOTE: The engine should always be assembled using new cylinder head bolts.

Cylinder Block View:

1. Position cylinder head gasket(s) on cylinder block. Install cylinder head locating dowels. Position cylinder head(s) onto the gaskets and locating dowels.

NOTE: The cylinder head(s) and intake manifold are torqued alternately and in sequence to insure correct fit and gasket crush.

Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:

2. Install and tighten cylinder head bolts, in the sequence shown to 30 Nm (22 ft-lb).

Intake Manifold/Cylinder Block:

3. Apply Silicone Sealer (Loctite 598, F1AZ-19562 A, or equivalent) to the block and cylinder head mating surfaces at the four corners shown. Install intake manifold gasket and again apply sealer to the four corner locations.

NOTE: Once applied, the silicone sealer will set-up in approximately 15 minutes. The intake manifold must be installed immediately after the sealer is applied.

Lower Intake Manifold Bolt Tightening Sequence:

4. Position lower intake manifold on the two guide studs and install nuts and bolts hand tight. Tighten the lower intake manifold bolts in sequence to 4-8 Nm (3-6 ft lb).
5. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence to 70 Nm (52 ft lb).
6. Tighten lower intake manifold to 8-15 Nm (6-11 ft lb).
7. Rotate cylinder head bolts 90 degrees tighter in sequence for final cylinder head torque step.
8. Finish tightening lower intake manifold by tightening in sequence to 15-21 Nm (11-15 ft lb) and then to 21-25 Nm (15-18 ft lb).

Valve Push Rod, Rocker Arm, and Shaft Assembly Installation:

9. Install valve push rods, rocker arms and shaft assemblies. Tighten rocker arm shaft support bolts evenly to 32 Nm +90° (24 ft lb +90°).
10. Apply Silicone Sealer (Loctite 598, F1AZ-19562 A, or equivalent) to the four locations at the joint where the intake manifold and cylinder heads meet.

Valve Rocker Covers:

11. Position valve rocker arm cover gasket in each cover and install valve rocker arm covers. Tighten rocker arm cover bolts evenly to 6-8 Nm (4.5-5.9 ft lb). Two minutes later tighten bolts to same specification.

NOTE: Valve rocker arm covers are tightened in 2 steps. Tighten bolts to specification. Two minutes later, tighten bolts to the same specification.

Upper Intake Manifold:

12. Install upper intake manifold and tighten nuts to 20-25 Nm (15-18 ft lb).
13. Install exhaust inlet pipe and exhaust manifold(s).
14. Install spark plugs.
15. Install E-DIS ignition coil and bracket assembly.
16. Install alternator.

Drive Belt Routing:

17. Install the accessory drive belt(s).
18. Install the power steering pump to the cylinder head.
19. Install the air conditioning compressor.
20. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
21. Connect the battery ground cable at the battery.

NOTE: On vehicles equipped with Closed Loop (CL), when the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.
