TRANSMISSION - C-6 AUTOMATIC - VACUUM REGULATOR VALVE (VRV) - OPERATIONAL CHECK AND ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
LIGHT TRUCK:
1991 E-350, F-350 1993 E-350, F-350
ISSUE:
The check and adjustment procedure for the Vacuum Regulator Valve (VRV) is omitted from the 1991 and 1993 Light Truck Diesel Service Manuals.
ACTION:
Use the service procedure below to check and adjust the Vacuum Regulator Valve (VRV).
NOTE:
THE ENGINE MUST NOT BE RUNNING WHEN PERFORMING THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the two part rubber vacuum connector from the top of the Vacuum Regulator Valve (VRV). The Vacuum Regulator Valve is located on the left side of the fuel injector pump. Refer to Figure 1.
2. Remove the throttle cable from the throttle lever on the right side of the pump. Remove the throttle return spring. Refer to Figure 2.
3. Attach a vacuum pump (with gauge) to the upper port (vacuum supply) of the Vacuum Regulator Valve. Refer to Figure 1.
4. Attach a vacuum gauge to the lower port (transmission) of the Vacuum Regulator Valve.
5. Apply a minimum of 20" of vacuum to the Vacuum Regulator Valve and maintain. It may be necessary to continually pump vacuum as it bleeds off (this is normal). To apply the vacuum, use the following procedure:
a. Cycle the throttle lever five (5) times from idle to WOT with vacuum applied.
b. Insert the gauge block, Rotunda part (T92T-7B200-AH), between the pump boss and the wide-open stop.
c. Hold the throttle stop against the gauge block by connecting the throttle return spring from the throttle lever ball stud to the throttle cable support bracket or hold it open by hand. The vacuum gauge attached to the lower (transmission) port should indicate 6-8" of vacuum.
d. If the vacuum is not within the 6-8" limit, the Vacuum Regulator Valve has to be readjusted. Adjust to achieve a reading of 7" (+/- .5") of vacuum with 20" minimum of vacuum applied. Refer to Figures 1 and 2.
6. To readjust the Vacuum Regulator Valve, use the following procedure:
a. Slightly loosen the bolts holding the Vacuum Regulator Valve tight to the pump. Refer to Figure 1.
b. While still applying vacuum, rotate the Vacuum Regulator Valve right or left slightly and watch the gauge. The vacuum should change. Rotate the Vacuum Regulator Valve to get 7" (+/- .5") of vacuum.
c. Tighten the bolts to 8-10 N-m (75-90 in.lbs.). Do not over torque the bolts for the plastic Vacuum Regulator Valve bolt pads may break.
7. Remove the gauge block. Refer to Figure 2.
8. Reattach the throttle return spring and throttle cable. Refer to Figure 1.
9. Check the Vacuum Regulator Valve.
a. Apply 20" minimum vacuum to the Vacuum Regulator Valve.
b. Cycle from idle to WOT five (5) times.
c. Check the vacuum gauge reading...
^ At curb idle throttle position (not fast idle), the vacuum gauge should indicate a minimum of 13" vacuum.
^ If less than 13", replace the Vacuum Regulator Valve (FOTZ-7B200-A) and adjust per the above procedures. Refer to Figures 1 and 2.
10. After a final check and adjustment, remove the vacuum gauge and pump and reattach the vacuum line connector to the Vacuum Regulator Valve. Refer to Figure 1.
11. Start engine and check throttle and transmission operation.
