Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Remove intake manifold, as outlined under ``Intake Manifold, Replace,'' then disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
2. Loosen air conditioner drive belt (if equipped), then loosen alternator bolts and remove the bolt attaching alternator bracket to cylinder head.
3. Remove thermactor air pump and alternator, then remove air pump bracket bolts and position to the side.
4. On models equipped with air conditioning, shutoff compressor service valves and remove valves and hoses from compressor then remove compressor and place out of way. Remove compressor and power steering pump mounting bracket from cylinder head and water pump.
5. On models less air conditioning, remove bolts attaching power steering bracket to left cylinder head and position bracket aside.
6. On E-Series and F-Super Duty models, disconnect oil filler tube.
7. On 1988-90 models, remove thermactor supply manifold from exhaust manifold.
8. On all models, remove rocker arm covers, rocker arm bolts, rocker arms, oil deflectors, fulcrums and pushrods. Keep all parts in sequence so that they can be reinstalled in their original locations.
9. Remove cylinder head bolts taking note as to the length of each bolt and remove the cylinder head and exhaust manifold as an assembly. If necessary to loosen cylinder head gasket seal, pry at forward corners of cylinder head and against casting provided on cylinder block.
10. Install heads in the reverse order of removal, and tighten cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in Fig. 17, and in three steps:
1. 70-80 ft-lbs.
2. 100-110 ft-lbs.
3. 130-140 ft-lbs.
11. Tighten intake manifold bolts in the sequence shown in Fig. 16, and in three steps:
1. 8-12 ft-lbs.
2. 12-22 ft-lbs.
3. 22-35 ft-lbs.
