ISSUE: Intermittent operation or failure of the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid (EVR) may be caused by water in the EVR and/or the vacuum hoses that are connected to the EVR. The driveability symptom(s) may be intermittent and may not be present at the time of the repair. Self test codes 33, 34 and 35 may be stored in continuous Self Test memory.
ACTION: Check the EVR and the EGR system vacuum hoses for water or moisture. If no water is found, follow the diagnostic procedure outlined in the Engine/Emission-Diagnosis Manual. If evidence of water is found, refer to the following procedures for service details.
Figure 1:
Figure 2:
1. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the EVR and the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR). Blow the hoses out with shop air. For EVR location, Refer to Figure 1.
2. Disconnect the Thermistor from the EVR solenoid. Refer to Figure 2. Remove the (2) two mounting screws that hold the EVR solenoid to the right side inner fender.
3. Install the new service EVR solenoid using the original mounting screws.
NOTE: THE NEW SERVICE SOLENOID MUST BE MOUNTED IN AN INVERTED (UPSIDE DOWN) POSITION. REFER TO FIGURES 1 AND 2.
4. Install the original Thermistor on the new EVR solenoid. Refer to Figures 1 and 2.
5. Install the vacuum hoses on the EVR solenoid and the EGR valve.
NOTE: WHEN INSTALLING THE VACUUM HOSES, MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO SHARP BENDS OR KINKS IN THE HOSES.
6. Clear code from continuous Self Test Memory.
7. Re-Run Self Test and verify that pass codes are received.
