Removal and Installation
REMOVAL1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Loosen pan attaching bolts and drain fluid from transmission.
NOTE: If fluid is to be reused, filter through a 100 mesh screen.
3. Remove transmission pan attaching bolts, pan, and gasket.
4. Remove filter screen and 0-rings.
5. Remove low reverse servo cover, piston, spring, and gasket.
6. Disconnect two wires at converter clutch solenoid, then the two wires at the 3-4 shift solenoid, if equipped.
7. Remove bolts from control valve body.
Note: Bolts are of different lengths and their locations are different.
8. Carefully ease body from case while unlocking and detaching selector lever connecting rod (Z-Link).
9. If valve body is being disassembled:
a. Clean all parts thoroughly in clean solvent and blow dry with moisture-free compressed air.
b. Inspect all valve and plug bores for scores, fluid passages for obstructions, check valve for free movement, mating surfaces for burrs or distortion, plugs and valves for burrs or scores.
c. Use a suitable crocus cloth to polish valves and plugs, if necessary.
NOTE: Avoid rounding sharp edges of valves and plugs with cloth.
d. Replace control valve body if bores or valves are scored beyond point of being cleaned up.
e. Inspect all springs for distortion, valves and plugs for free movement in their respective bores.
NOTE: Valves and plugs, when clean and dry, must fall into their respective bores of their own weight.
f. Roll manual valve on a flat surface to check for a bent condition.
INSTALLATION
1. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Attach and lock selector lever connecting rod (Z-link) to manual valve and ease control valve body into case.
CAUTION: Use caution not to bend connecting rod (Z-link).
Control Valve Body Identification:
b. Insert correct length bolts into holes A and B to position control valve body in case.
c. Insert remaining bolts, except filter and 3-4 shift solenoid retainer bolts, and torque to 71-97 in lbs.
NOTE: 3-4 shift solenoid retainer must be on outside of metal of inner retainer.
d. Remove bolt from hole A and install detent spring to bolt, then reassemble and torque bolts A and B to 71-97 in lbs.
e. Torque oil pan attaching bolts to 98-115 in lbs.
