ISSUE: No start, hard start, rough idle and lack of power may be caused by a camshaft distributor drive gear that is out of specification. This can cause early camshaft or distributor gear failure at less than 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometers).

ACTION: Install a new camshaft assembly and distributor assembly that are within specification. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Check the camshaft and distributor gear for signs of wear or failure.

2. Replace both the camshaft assembly and distributor assembly if either gear is badly worn or has failed. Refer to the appropriate Truck Shop Manual, Section 21-23 for removal and installation procedures.

CAUTION: DO NOT REPLACE JUST THE DISTRIBUTOR GEAR.

NOTE: ONLY USE SERVICE REPLACEMENT CAMSHAFTS THAT HAVE A GREEN PAINT STRIPE NEAR THE CAMSHAFT DISTRIBUTOR GEAR. DO NOT USE CAMSHAFTS OTHER THAN THOSE DESCRIBED BELOW.

3. Install a new service camshaft assembly (D9HZ-6250-A) for 6.1L and 7.0L engines and (C8SZ-6250-A) for 7.5L engines.
