Engine: Service and Repair
1. Drain cooling system and engine oil.2. Mark hood hinge locations and remove hood.
3. Disconnect battery and ground cables from cylinder block.
4. On models with EFI, remove bolts that secure the air cleaner and bracket assembly, then disconnect thermactor air pump inlet hose from front of the air cleaner housing.
5. On models with EFI, disconnect the air outlet tube assembly from the throttle body, the air inlet tube from the air cleaner and the thermactor bypass valve hose from the air inlet tube.
6. On all models, remove air cleaner assembly, air inlet and outlet tubes and the intake duct assembly, including carbon canister hose and crankcase ventilation hose.
7. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses and transmission oil cooler lines (if equipped).
8. On models equipped with engine oil cooler, disconnect cooler lines from oil filter adapter Do not disconnect engine oil cooler lines from fittings behind or at the cooler.
9. On models equipped with A/C, discharge refrigerant from system, then remove A/C condenser and disconnect lines from compressor.
10. On all models, remove fan shroud attaching bolts and position shroud over fan.
11. Remove radiator, fan shroud, fan clutch, fan blade, fan spacer, belts and pulley.
12. Remove alternator mounting bolts and swing alternator aside.
13. On models with EFI, disconnect throttle and transmission linkage at throttle body and remove accelerator cable bracket from upper intake manifold.
14. On all models, remove speed control hardware (if equipped).
15. Disconnect electrical connector from oil pressure sending unit, then disconnect vacuum hoses from evaporative canister.
16. On carbureted models, disconnect and plug flexible fuel line at fuel tank. On models with EFI, disconnect fuel lines at quick disconnect couplings and vacuum lines from intake manifold
17. On models with EFI, disconnect ERG tube from left exhaust manifold and upper intake manifold, plug manifold opening, then disconnect exhaust air supply bypass valve hose from MTA check valve.
18. On carbureted models, disconnect accelerator cable from carburetor.
19. On all models, disconnect speed control linkages and transmission kickdown rod and remove rod retaining spring, if equipped.
20. Disconnect power brake booster vacuum hose, if equipped.
21. Disconnect heater hoses from water pump and intake manifold.
22. Disconnect electrical connector from coolant temperature sending unit.
23. Remove flywheel housing-to-engine upper attaching bolts.
24. Disconnect primary wire from ignition coil, then remove wiring harness from left rocker arm cover and position aside.
25. Disconnect ground strap from cylinder head.
26. Raise and support vehicle.
27. Remove starter motor.
28. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds, then the engine support insulators from frame brackets.
29. On models equipped with automatic transmission, remove converter inspection plate, then the converter-to-flywheel attaching bolts.
30. On models equipped with manual transmission, remove rear cover plate from flywheel housing, then the remaining flywheel housing-to-engine attaching bolts.
31. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect A/C compressor magnetic clutch electrical connector.
32. On all models, lower vehicle and support transmission with a suitable jack.
33. Install lifting brackets to intake manifold and attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
34. Raise engine slightly and carefully separate from transmission, then lift engine from vehicle.
35. Reverse procedure to install, ensuring engine to transmission bolts are tighten to specifications.
