Backing Plate: Service and Repair

Rear Brakes:






REMOVE
1. Raise vehicle and position suitable safety stands under vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel and drum. Disconnect the brake line from the brake cylinder and plug line to prevent air from entering the system.
3. Remove the brake components. Service and Repair
4. Disconnect the parking brake lever from the cable.
5. Disconnect parking brake cable from backing plate by squeezing locking fingers together using a 9/16-inch flare nut wrench and pulling cable through plate.
6. Remove the axle shaft.

CAUTION: When removing the axle shaft from the housing be careful not to damage the oil seal.

7. Remove the nuts retaining the backing plate to the housing and remove the backing plate.

INSTALL
1. Position the backing plate on the axle housing assembly.
2. Install the backing plate retaining nuts. Alternately and evenly tighten the nuts to 34-47 Nm (25-35 ft lb).

Backing Plate Lubrication Points:






3. Apply a light coating of disc brake caliper slide grease to the ledge pads at the points where the brake shoes contact the backing plates.
4. Feed the parking brake cable through its hole in the backing plate and engage locking fingers.
5. Install the axle shaft.
6. Install the brake cylinder and brake shoes. Connect the parking brake cable to the lever.
7. Connect the brake line to the brake cylinder and install the brake drum and wheel.
8. Perform brake bleeding procedures.
9. Adjust the brake shoes.
10. Lower vehicle.
