Reference: 1984 Ranger/Bronco II Light Truck Shop Manual, Section 11-12. This TSB Article provides additional information for 1984 Ranger (4x4)/Bronco II vehicles equipped with automatic hub locks. During normal hub lock installation or removal, the cam assembly locking key must be inspected to determine if the portion of the key which locks the wheel bearing adjusting nut to the spindle keyway has separated from the cam assembly (See Figure 12). If such separation is present, the cam assembly must be replaced. Not replacing the cam assembly in such cases could result in hub lock malfunctions and affect wheel retention. In addition, the following "CAUTION" statements must be followed when servicing the automatic hub locks. CAUTION" statements must also be included in the Shop Manual service procedure as indicated below:
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the spindle threads, look into the spindle keyway under the adjusting nut hole and remove any portion of the locking key that has separated from the cam assembly before removing the adjusting nut. (See Figure 12). If this condition exists, DO NOT RE-USE. Discard entire cam assembly and replace with -1A053-Service Kit.
Add this caution to Step #6 under automatic locking hubs (front wheel bearing adjustment section) on page 11-12-3 of the 1984 Ranger/Bronco II Shop Manual.
CAUTION: Care must be taken when aligning spindle nut adjustment hole with center of spindle keyway slot to prevent damage to cam assembly locking key.
Add this caution to Step #10 under automatic locking hubs (front wheel bearing adjustment section) on page 11-12-4 of the 1984 Ranger/Bronco II Shop Manual.
