Subject: Service Recall 479 - Certain 1984 DSO E350 Basic Chassis Vehicles Equipped With Hydraulic Brakes for Brake Tubes Replacement

VEHICLES INVOLVED

1984 E350 basic chassis vehicles with hydraulic brakes built at the Lorain Assembly Plant from November 15, 1983 through December 23, 1983.

DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT AND CORRECTION

Some 1984 E350 basic chassis vehicles equipped with hydraulic brakes were built with incorrect brake tubes connecting the master cylinder to the brake proportioning valve. Affected are all E350 DSO basic chassis vehicles built at the Lorain Assembly Plant from November 15, 1983 through December 23, 1983. The brake tube nut thread sizes for the front and rear brake subsystem brake tubes on these vehicles are of reversed compatibility to the brake proportioning valve connections. This results in the front and rear brake subsystems being serviced by the incorrect master cylinder reservoir compartment. As the reservoir compartments are of unequal size, less fluid volume is available to service the front brake subsystem, resulting in reduced braking capability.

To correct this condition, the hydraulic brake tubes must be replaced on the affected units.

Repair procedures, parts information and claiming instructions are provided in this Service Recall Bulletin.

*** IMPORTANT ***

No vehicle included in this recall that is currently at a body builder shop or at a dealership is to be delivered until the brake tubes affected by this recall have been replaced. Certain statements in the Incomplete Vehicle Manuals accompanying these basic chassis presume that the chassis were equipped with brake tubes of the correct design.
Any questions regarding the contents of this bulletin should be directed to your Ford Parts and Service Division District Office.

NOTIFICATION AND DEALER ACTIONS

Each affected body builder was sent a copy of the serial number listing of affected basic chassis vehicles reported to be ordered by your dealership. No other basic chassis vehicles are affected by this service action. FPSD district offices arranged with certain dealers located near body builders with affected units to replace the incorrect brake lines at the body builders' facilities. Parts were shipped to the body builders. Dealers and body builders were instructed to repair all units prior to delivery.

As all suspect units have been quarantined at body builders or dealers, no owner notification is planned at this time. However, if you have knowledge that a suspect vehicle has been delivered without replacement of the brake tubes, please contact the owner immediately and install the correct brake tubes.
