Vehicles Involved, Decription of Defect and Correction & Owner Notification Information

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

1984 E-250/350 Econolines and Club Wagons with single rear wheels built from November 17 through December 9, 1983.

DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT AND CORRECTION:

Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1984 E-250/350 Econoline and Club Wagon vehicles equipped with single rear wheels. Some of the 16.5 X 6.75 inch wheels on these vehicles may have substandard welds at the rim to disc attachment. With extended vehicle use and depending on vehicle loading, cracks may occur in a substandard weld and propagate into the wheel rim. If this were to occur, loss of tire air pressure or separation of the rim and tire assembly from the wheel disc may result with the potential for loss of vehicle control and a vehicle crash. The driver might be forewarned by wheel wobble or vibration prior to complete separation of a rim and tire assembly.

To correct this condition, it is necessary to inspect the wheels on suspect vehicles and to replace Firestone wheels found to have a manufacturing date of November 7 through 23, 1983.
