Engine - Low Power/Poor Driveability
Article No. 85-7-17FUEL TANK - CONTAMINATION - FORTY (40) GALLON CAPACITY - SINGLE FUEL TANK - 7.5L GASOLINE ENGINE
LIGHT TRUCK 1984 E-350 CUTAWAY
TSB Article No. 84-22-10 dated October 23, 1984 announced the availability of a single forty (40) gallon capacity fuel tank on E-350 cutaway chassis with 158" and 176" wheelbases. 1984 model vehicles equipped with the forty-gallon fuel tank may exhibit lack of power and/or driveability due to the presence of foreign material in the fuel tank. This material can obstruct the inlet screen of the vapor separator valve and the carburetor inlet filter.
1985 model vehicles with the forty-gallon fuel tank are equipped with a frame mounted in-line filter which prevents foreign material from entering the vapor separator valve and the carburetor inlet filter.
Figure 22 - Fuel Filter Retrofitting:
If a lack of power and/or driveability is encountered on a 1984 model vehicle due to obstructions in the vapor separator valve and carburetor inlet filter, it is recommended that an in-line fuel filter be retrofitted. Refer to Figure 22 for retrofit details.
The fuel lines must be flushed or blown clear with compressed air to insure all debris has been removed. The vapor separator valve must be cleaned or replaced and the carburetor inlet filter replaced when there has been contamination in the fuel supply system.
Perform a fuel system volume check as described in TSB Article No. 84-24-14 dated November 20, 1984 at the inlet side of the vapor separator valve to insure that the in-tank electric fuel pump inlet filter is clear of obstruction. If the results of the fuel system volume check do not meet specification, it will be necessary to remove the fuel tank from the vehicle for cleaning of the tank and replacement of the fuel pump inlet filter.
