PERFORMANCE POOR AND POOR FUEL ECONOMY - (4.9L)
LIGHT TRUCKS 1984 E, F AND BRONCO
CALIBRATIONS: 4-52G (except 3.55 axle), L (except 3.55 axle), R, S, T and 4-51 E, H-R00
This article is being re-submitted to correct an improper pan number in Step 2-f.
For a concern of poor performance and poor fuel economy, a service fix has been approved for all states except California. Perform the following to service the concern:
1. Reset the initial timing from 10~ BTDC to:
a. 4-52G-R00 12~ BTDC (except w/3.5 axle ratio)
b. 4-52L-R00 12~ BTDC (except w/3.5 axle ratio)
c. 4-52R-R00 14~ BTDC
d. 4-52S-R00 14~ BTDC
e. 4-52T-R00 14~ BTDC
f. 4-51E-R00 12~ BTDC
g. 4-51H-R00 14~ BTDC
NOTE: DO NOT increase the initial timing beyond that specified above. Increased timing may exceed rotor registry capabilities and result in crossfire between cylinders.
NOTE: No carburetor idle speed adjustments should be made. The electronic idle speed control system will compensate for any initial timing advance increase.
2. Remove the production EGR valve and install the EGR valve listed:
a. 4-52G-R00 E3TZ-9D448-N (except w/3.5 axle ratio)
b. 4-52L-R00 E4TZ-9D448-D (except w/3.5 axle ratio)
c. 4-52R-R00 E4TZ-9D448-D
d. 4-52S-R00 E3TZ-9D448-N
e. 4-52T-R00 E4TZ-9D448-D
f. 4-51E-R00 E4TZ-9D448-D
g. 4-51H-R00 No Change
3. Install a Ford Dealer Authorized Modification decal denoting the changes.
4. Run quick test to verify the integrity of the EEC IV system.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
