Recall - Heater Core: Overview

No.: 607

Date: July, 1994

To: All Dodge and Jeep(R) & Eagle Dealers

Subject:
Safety Recall # 607 -- Heater Core Bypass

Models:
1988 through 1992 Model Year Eagle Premier and 1990 through 1992 Model Year Dodge Monaco (BB-Body) Vehicles

The heater core may fail due to prolonged exposure to high temperature engine cooling system fluid. Failure will allow the discharge of cooling system steam into the passenger compartment which may reduce driver visibility. To correct the condition, a coolant temperature controlled heater core fluid bypass valve must be installed.

IMPORTANT:
Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer inventory. Federal law requires you to complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery.

Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.

Service Procedure Videotape

As an additional service aid, a videotape demonstrating the service procedure has been included with the May, 1994 Master Tech program.

Dealer Notification & Vehicle List

Involved dealers:
Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address) will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter and a list of the involved vehicles by Certified Mail.

Important:
Dealer notification by Certified Mail is required by federal law for all safety recalls. Responsible dealership personnel should be instructed to sign for this Certified Mail without hesitation as it concerns urgent safety recall information.

The Vehicle List is arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.

All dealers:
Each Dodge and Jeep & Eagle dealer will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter by first class mail.

DIAL System Function 70

All involved vehicles will be entered to DIAL System Function 70 at the time of recall implementation for dealer inquiry by VIN as needed.

Parts

Important:
Each involved dealer, to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address)1 will receive, and be billed for, enough Heater Core Bypass Packages, Recall PN C3906070, to service 25% of those vehicles. Additional parts may be ordered by all dealers, as needed, to support customer demands.

Each parts package contains these components:

Owner Notification and Service Scheduling

All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. They are requested to schedule appointments for the service with their dealers at the earliest possible date. A copy of the owner notification letter is included.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.

Service Procedure

IMPORTANT:
Due to differences in the engine cooling system, the vehicle model year must be determined to properly service vehicles equipped with the 3.0L 6-cylinder engine. The 10th character of the vehicle identification number indicates the vehicle model year. Also, 1991 models can be differentiated from early-1991 models by the "8" in the 12th VIN position (early-1991 models have a "7" in the 12th position).
