The engine coolant bottle cap on listed model year Premier and Medallion cars may not adequately vent steam if extreme engine overheating occurs for any reason. Excessive pressure build-up in the cooling system may result. to correct the condition, a redesigned cap must be installed.
This service requirement is a supplement to the above referenced Recall # 425 involving 1985-1987 Alliance/Encore models.
New caps will be mailed directly to owners of involved cars for installation by them (or, if preferred, by their dealers). The mailing will continue over several weeks as sufficient parts become available.
Important:
Some involved cars may be in dealers' new or used car stock. Be sure to complete the service on these cars as well as any which are brought in for other service before releasing them to owners.
Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.
Vehicle List
Each Jeep/Eagle dealer to whom involved cars were invoiced will receive listings of them arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved cars.
The Vehicle Lists will be distributed prior to owner notification for involved vehicles.
Each Jeep/Eagle dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this letter by Compak Mail for use in performing the service on involved cars upon request.
Parts
Engine Coolant bottle Caps, P/N J4546111, are being shipped to all owners of involved cars who are known to Chrysler. Dealers may order additional caps at dealer cost from parts depots if required.
Owner Notification and Service Scheduling
All involved car owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. A revised engine coolant system bottle cap is enclosed with each notification letter, along with instructions for installation by the owner. Owners who prefer not to do the installation themselves are instructed to take the caps to their Jeep/Eagle dealers for installation.
Owner notifications will be mailed starting in March, and will continue over several weeks as sufficient parts become available.
A copy of the owner notification letter is enclosed for your information.
Service Procedure
Remove the existing black cap (with white insert) and replace it with the new, high dome black cap (with stainless steel insert), P/N J4546111.
Note:
Some caps may be very tight, requiring the use of channel lock pliers to loosen.
Completion Reporting and Reimbursement
Claims for vehicles serviced by dealers must be submitted by DIAL dealers on the DIAL System. Non DIAL dealers may submit WRO's. Claims submitted will be used by Chrysler to record recall service completions and provide dealer payments.
Enter only ONE VIN per claim on a WRO. Fill in the labor operation number and time allowance and write on the WRO "Recall # 441 -- Engine Coolant Bottle Cap." Do NOT enter other service claims on the same WRO.

Parts Return
Engine Coolant system bottle caps replaced for this program must be returned.
