Power Steering Pump Overhaul

Fig. 3 Flow Control Valve Removal:

DISASSEMBLY

1. Remove pump from engine, remove pulley, flow control valve fitting, O-ring and flow control valve and spring.
2. Remove pump shaft retaining ring, pump shaft and bearing assembly.
3. Support pump shaft bearing at inner race and press shaft out of bearing.

6. Press out thrust plate with a 5/8 inch brass drift, then remove and discard thrust plate O-ring.
7. Remove pump ring, rotor, vanes, dowel pins and pressure plate. It may be necessary to use a press to remove pressure plate. Remove and discard pressure plate O-ring.

9. From pump shaft side of housing, using a punch and hammer, remove sleeve assembly.

INSPECTION

Clean all components with mineral spirits and dry them with compressed air. Replace all O-rings.
1. Inspect flow control valve for nicks and scratches. Remove minor imperfections with crocus cloth. Valve should move freely in bore. If valve sticks inspect valve and housing bore. Replace housing or valve if damaged.
2. Inspect pressure and thrust plates for flatness, and replace if scored, worn, or surfaces are not flat.
3. Inspect pump ring for any wear or damage. A polished appearance is normal. Replace if damaged in any way.
4. Inspect thrust plate dowels, pressure plate spring, rotor and rotor vanes. Replace if worn, cracked or distorted.
5. Inspect pump shaft and splines, and replace shaft retaining ring. Replace shaft if worn, cracked or damaged.
6. Inspect pump housing and bores checking for distortion, cracks and porosity. Inspect pump fitting for any damage. Inspect end plate for wear. Replace parts if damage is found. If the end plate retaining ring is distorted in any way, it must be replaced.
7. Inspect sleeve assembly and shaft bearing. Replace if worn or damaged.

ASSEMBLY

Be sure all parts are clean and well lubricated with power steering fluid only. Dirt in the assembly will cause noise, leaks, and premature wear.
1. Press sleeve assembly with a socket into housing. Make sure sleeve is fully seated. Do not over press sleeve as this could damage O-ring seat.
2. Install O-ring on sleeve assembly. Install short dowel pin in pump housing, then install the pressure plate spring over sleeve assembly into housing.
3. Install O-ring on pressure plate. Place a reference mark on the pressure plate directly over the dowel pin hole in the plate. This mark will help align short dowel pin and hole when installing pressure plate.
4. Install pressure plate in housing, taking care to fully seat short dowel in pressure plate pin hole, then install two pump ring dowel pins in pressure plate.

5. Install pump ring on the dowel pins. Ensure pump ring identification marks are facing upward. The identification marks are two shallow dots located next to the dowel pin hole.
6. Install pump rotor with counterbore toward pump shaft end or housing, then install rotor vanes with rounded edges facing outward.

Fig. 10 Thrust Plate Installation:

7. Install thrust plate O-ring, and thrust plate, ensuring thrust plate engages pump ring dowel pins.
8. Press thrust plate into pump housing, then install thrust plate retaining ring.
9. Install new shaft seal by pressing into housing with a suitable size socket, ensuring seal is fully seated.
10. Install pump shaft bearing onto pump shaft, taking care to support bearing inner race when pressing into position.

Fig. 11 Bearing Retaining Ring Installation:

11. Install shaft in pump housing, rotating until splines engage with rotor. Ensure shaft is bottomed in the housing, then install bearing retaining ring. Install retaining ring so large lug of ring is to the right of the small lug.
12. Install pump pulley, then the pump in vehicle.
