SAFETY RECALL-- ENGINE COOLANT BOTTLE CAPDear Eagle Premier or Renault Medallion Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Chrysler Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in some 1988 Premier, 1988 Medallion and 1989 Medallion passenger cars. The defect involves the engine coolant bottle cap, which may not adequately vent steam if the engine overheats. Your car, whose Vehicle Identification Number is shown on the enclosed form, is one of the involved vehicles. Immediate replacement of the coolant bottle cap is required to correct the condition.
With the present cap, excessive pressure could build up in the engine coolant system if the engine in your car severely overheats. This pressure might cause a rupture or leakage in the coolant system. if such a leak occurred in the heater core, it could allow steam to escape into the passenger compartment. This steam could interfere with visibility, possibly resulting in an accident without prior warning.
To prevent this from happening, please install the enclosed replacement cap in place of the original coolant system cap. Follow the instructions printed in this notification.
Important:
Be careful to follow the instructions exactly. Do not replace the cap while the coolant is still hot.
If you need dealer assistance, any Jeep/Eagle dealer can install your new cap. The service should take only a few minutes, and you will not be charged for it.
If you ask your dealer to perform the needed service and have any problem obtaining it, please contact the Chrysler Zone Office in your area (shown on the enclosed listing). A Zone representative will arrange for prompt servicing of your car.
We regret any inconvenience which this action may cause you. However, we believe that you understand our concern for motor vehicle safety, and for your continued satisfaction with our products. If your dealer fails or is unable to remedy this defect without charge and within a reasonable time, you may submit a written complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Washington, D.C. 20590, or call the Toll Free Number 1-800-424-9393.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
