Repair Procedure
This procedure involves removal of the A/C module circuit board in order to apply a protective coating.NOTE: SOME VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN FITTED WITH A MODIFIED MODULE. MODIFIED MODULES CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY A YELLOW DOT VISIBLE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE MODULE.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the radio trim cover.
3. Remove the radio from the instrument panel.
4. Remove the three electrical connectors form the A/C control panel.
5. Remove the A/C control panel.
IF HIGH HUMIDITY CONDITIONS EXIST, THE FOLLOWING STEPS SHOULD BE PERFORMED IN A SEALED AIR CONDITIONED AREA SUCH AS AN OFFICE. A HAIR DRYER SHOUID BE USED TO DRY THE CIRCUIT BOARDS AND INSURE THAT THEY ARE MOISTURE FREE. USE CAUTION WHEN DISASSEMBLING THE MODULE. AVOID ANY CONTACT OF THE PRINTED CIRCUIT OR COMPONENTS WITH METALLIC OBJECTS.
Figure 1:
6. Remove the blower and temperature slide buttons (A) by prying upward on them (Figure 1).
Figure 2:
7. Separate the two case halves of the A/C control panel by removing four screws (B Figure 2). BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE ILLUMINATION BULBS WHICH PROTRUDE FROM THE CIRCUIT BOARD. Remove the rear cover.
Figure 3:
8. Remove the two guides (C) from the slide support (D). Remove the plastic slide support (D) from the circuit board by carefully prying on the side of the support with a small screw driver (Figure 3).
Figure 4:
9. Remove the back cover (E) held by two tabs (F) (Figure 4).
Figure 5:
10. Remove the first circuit board which is held in place by five plastic tabs (G) in the housing (Figure 5).
Figure 6:
11. Remove the second circuit board held in place by six plastic tabs (H) in the housing (Figure 6).
Figure 7:
12. Inspect the circuit board for signs of damage or open tracks. If damage exists, the module will have to be replaced.
13. Cover the three electrical connectors (I) on the circuit boards to prevent the conformal coating from getting on the terminals (Figure 7).
Figure 8:
NOTE: READ AND FOLLOW ALL OF THE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS PRINTED ON THE COATING CAN.
14. Apply a thin layer of conformal coating to the solder side of both circuit boards making sure to completely cover all of the tracks (Figure 8). Do NOT COAT THE COMPONENT SIDE OF THE CIRCUIT BOARDS.
15. Snap the two circuit boards back into the housing
16. Install the back cover.
17. Install the plastic slide support onto the circuit board and install the guides onto the support.
18. Assemble the two case halves and install the 4 screws and the blower motor and temperature slide buttons.
19. Mark the bottom of the control module with a dot of yellow paint.
20. Install the control module in the instrument panel and connect the three electrical connectors.
21. Install the radio and the trim cover.
22. Connect the battery.
