This bulletin provides the updated procedure and torque specification for tightening the front shock absorber upper locknut on Medallion vehicles.
Record the following information on page J-14 of the M.R. 289 manual, as an additional step in the Front Spring and Shock Absorber assembly procedure. Also record the revised upper locknut torque specification on page J-2 in the M.R. 289.
The following procedure should be used when investigating a customer complaint of a knocking noise in the front strut/shock absorber area.

CAUTION: DO NOT TIGHTEN THE UPPER LOCKNUT USING AN IMPACT GUN.
1. Tighten the locknut (A) to approximately 41 N-m (30 ft. lbs.) torque using an allen wrench to hold the shock absorber shaft. (Figure 1)
2. Remove the allen wrench, and using a suitable socket with a torque wrench, tighten the upper locknut to 70 N-m (+/- 10 N-m) 52 ft.lbs. (+/- 7 ft.lbs.).

3. Record the upper locknut torque specification change on the chart on page J- 2 in the M.R. 289 manual. (Figure 2)
