Rack and Pinion
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.2. Remove instrument panel lower cover attaching screws, then the lower cover.
3. Remove steering shaft coupling pinch bolt. Mark position of coupling and steering shaft.
4. On models equipped with A/C, carefully and slowly discharge refrigerant from system.
5. On all models, raise and support vehicle, then remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
6. Remove nuts securing tie rod ends, then using tool T.Av.476, disconnect rod ends.
7. Disconnect electrical connectors from ignition module.
8. Remove bolt and nut attaching diagnostic connectors to the dash panel and position connectors aside.
9. Remove steering bracket to steering gear rack attaching nuts and bolts.
10. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect and cap lines from the expansion valve. Remove bolt attaching retainer to the side sill and position lines aside. A/C hoses and lines are under extreme pressure. Before disconnecting hoses and lines, ensure A/C system is completely discharged of refrigerant.
11. On all models, remove crossmember attaching bolts, then the crossmember.
12. Install tool Mot.453.01 or equivalent, onto power steering pump reservoir hoses to prevent fluid leakage.
13. Remove power steering hose bracket and disconnect power steering hoses from gear assembly.
14. Remove nuts attaching steering gear support collar to body.
15. Remove steering gear mounting bracket nut, then the bracket.
16. Lower steering gear and move forward.
17. Mark position of the intermediate shaft coupling and the steering gear shaft for assembly reference, then remove coupling pinch bolt.
18. Tilt steering gear downward and remove from vehicle.
19. Reverse procedure to install.
