Upper Steering Shaft & Bushing

1. Remove instrument panel lower trim cover.
2. On models with cruise control, grasp wire located on lower cover. Pull wire downward to release spring loaded commutator brush. If wire is not readily accessible, loosen trim cover attaching screws enough to reach the wire.
3. Remove screws attaching trim cover to column, then the cover.
4. Remove trim cover from steering wheel.
5. Mark position of steering wheel and column shaft for assembly.
6. Remove steering wheel nut, then pull steering wheel off of shaft.
7. Remove attaching screw securing electrical switches to column assembly.
8. Mark position of coupling (F) and upper steering shaft (G) for assembly, then remove coupling pinch bolt (H).m
9. Remove ignition switch.
10. Remove upper steering shaft and shaft bushing as follows:
a. Temporarily mount steering wheel (J) and wheel nut onto shaft.
b. Pull upward on shaft (K) until top bushing (L) comes out of column jacket. Shaft guide (M) will push top bushing out of column as steering wheel and shaft are pulled upward.
11. Remove steering wheel, top bushing and upper steering shaft from column jacket as an assembly.
12. Remove steering wheel from shaft, then remove top bushing.
