This Technical Service Bulletin revises the automatic transmission fluid level check procedures for the ZF transmissions. Different procedures are required depending upon normal or cold transmission fluid temperature.

Procedure I - Transmission at NORMAL operating temperature 175~ F to 200~F (80~C to 95~C).

NOTE: IF VEHICLE HAS JUST BEEN DRIVEN AT HIGH SPEED OR IN CITY TRAFFIC DURING HOT WEATHER (HEAVY AIR CONDITIONING OPERATION) AND/OR TOWING A TRAILER, WAIT 30 MINUTES WITH HOOD OPENED TO ALLOW THE TRANSMISSION FLUID TO COOL TO THE NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE RANGE BEFORE CHECKING FLUID LEVEL.

1. Position vehicle on a level surface, set parking brake.

2. Shift transmission through all gear ranges pausing momentarily in each range, return to the "PARK" position.

3. Check fluid level on the side of the dipstick marked HOT. (Figure 1.)

The level is correct if it is within the crosshatch area between the ADD and FULL marks on the dipstick.
CAUTION: IT REQUIRES ONLY 1/2 PINT (0.25 LITER) OF FLUID TO RAISE THE LEVEL FROM THE ADD TO FULL LINE. DO NOT OVERFILL.
Procedure II - Transmission COLD (ambient) temperatures.

1. Position vehicle on a level surface, set parking brake.

2. Shift transmission into PARK, start engine.

3. Set the climate control selector button to the OFF position.

4. Let the engine idle in the PARK position until the engine cooling fan has cycled three (3) times before checking fluid level.

5. Check fluid level on the side of the dipstick marked HOT. (Figure 1.)

The level is correct if it is within the crosshatch area between the ADD and FULL marks on the dipstick. (Figure 1.)
This information should be noted on page F22 in the Premier Workshop Manual (M.R. 287), cross out the transmission fluid level check procedure and reference this TSB Number 21-51-88.
