Axle Assembly Removal and Installation
The torsion bars do not require removal from the axle assembly to necessitate rear axle removal.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove rear tire and wheel assembly.
4. Remove shock absorbers.
5. Disconnect parking brake cable from rear wheels.
6. Disconnect and cap brake lines.
7. Disconnect brake compensator linkage from axle assembly.
8. Support axle assembly using a suitable jack.
9. Remove axle assembly attaching bolts.
10. Lower and remove axle assembly from vehicle.
11. Reverse procedure to install. Check bearing play as follows:
a. Install a suitable dial indicator onto rear brake drum.
b. Measure axial play at the end of the axle shaft.
c. Axial play should not exceed 0.001 inch.
d. If axial play exceeds specified amount, replace brake drum hub bearing.
