SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Under certain braking conditions, some 1988 Medallion vehicles may exhibit a howling type noise from the rear brakes.
DIAGNOSIS
Verify the rear brake noise by driving the vehicle as follows: With the parking brake release button depressed, gradually apply the parking brake to actuate the rear brakes only. If a rear brake noise is noted, use the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
This repair procedure involves installation of six brake shoe silencer pads - per backing plate in locations (A) (Figure 1).
1. Raise vehicle and remove rear wheels.
2. Remove brake drum retaining screws and brake drum.
3. Remove brake shoe holddown springs (B) (Figure 2). Allow the brake shoes to move away from the backing plate to gain clearance for cleaning and silencer pad installation.
4. Thoroughly clean any existing material and/or adhesive from the brake shoe contact points (A) (Figure 1).
5. Carefully slide the six silencer pads into position over the brake shoe contact points on the backing plate (Figure 3).
NOTE:
THE SILENCER PADS ARE HELD IN POSITION WITHOUT THE NEED FOR ADHESIVE.
6. Carefully reposition the brake shoes on the backing plate and install the brake shoe holddown springs.
7. Install brake drum and wheel.
8. Repeat this procedure on the opposite side of the vehicle.
