SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some 1988 Medallions with automatic transaxles built before vehicle FAB No. L48A-21000 and K48A-6800 may require a higher than normal effort to shift the transmission lever through all ranges, due to corrosion of the pawl (intermediate pivot).

DIAGNOSIS
Raise the vehicle. Disconnect the shift lever cable from the pawl (intermediate pivot) ball stud. Disconnect the pawl to transmission connecting rod at the pawl ball stud. (Figure 1.) Rotate the pawl. If the pawl does not rotate freely perform the following repair procedure.

1 Spacer T5001294
2 Washers J0740501

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove the pawl assembly from the transaxle. Discard the pawl, spacer and the two (2) washers.
2. Clean the pawl assembly attaching bolt.
3. Coat the new spacer (PN T5001294) with "Molykote 33 Medium" grease (PN T1028179) and insert the spacer into the new pawl (PN T0735761).
4. Install the pawl assembly and the two (2) new washers (PN J0740501).
CAUTION: THE WASHERS MUST BE INSTALLED AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2.
5. Tighten the pawl attaching bolt to 13 ft.lbs. (17.4 N-m) torque.
6. Connect the transmission connecting rod to the pawl ball stud. Connect the shift lever cable to the pawl ball stud.
7. Check shift lever operation and adjust shift lever cable as required.
