Removal/Disassembly
UPPER STEERING SHAFT & BUSHING
1. Remove instrument panel lower trim cover.
2. On models equipped with cruise control, grasp wire located on lower cover. Pull the wire downward to release spring loaded commutator brush. If wire is not readily accessible, loosen trim cover attaching screws enough to reach the wire.
3. Remove screws attaching trim cover to the column, then the cover.
4. Remove trim cover from steering wheel.
5. Mark position of the steering wheel and column shaft for assembly.
6. Remove steering wheel nut and pull steering wheel off the shaft.
7. Remove attaching screw securing electrical switches to the column assembly.

8. Mark position of coupling (F) and upper steering shaft (G) for assembly, then remove coupling pinch bolt (H).
9. Remove ignition switch.

10. Remove upper steering shaft and shaft bushing as follows:
a. Temporarily mount the steering wheel (J) and wheel nut onto shaft.
b. Pull upward on the shaft (K) until the top bushing (L) comes out of the column jacket. The shaft guide (M) will push the top bushing (L) out of the column as the steering wheel and shaft are pulled upward.
11. Remove steering wheel, top bushing and upper steering shaft from column jacket as an assembly.
12. Remove steering wheel from shaft and remove top bushing.
INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT REMOVAL
1. Remove upper steering shaft and top bushing.
2. Move toe board boot away from the intermediate shaft coupling.
3. Mark position of the intermediate shaft to steering gear coupling (N) for assembly. Mark both coupling and the shaft on the steering gear.
