Parking Brake Cable: Adjustments

Fig. 3 Self-adjuster Mechanism:





1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove rear tire and wheel assemblies.
3. Remove rear brake drums.
4. Loosen attaching nut at equalizer bracket.
5. Loosen attaching nut to the end of the threaded rod.
6. Verify operation of the self adjuster mechanism (E) by rotating the star wheel adjusters (D) in both directions.

7. Using star wheel adjuster (D), adjust rear brake shoes to obtain dimension X. Dimension X should be 8.97-9.0 inch.
8. With rear brake shoes adjusted to 8.97-9.0 inch, back off star wheel adjuster (D) 5-6 teeth.

9. Verify stop on lever (B), is against brake shoe at point (C).
10. This will verify that the brake cables are returning to their normal position.
11. Install rear brake drums.
12. Install tire and wheel assemblies.
13. Pull up on parking brake lever to the second notch or tooth.
14. Adjust nut on equalizer bracket until both rear wheels are locked.
15. With parking brake lever still on the second notch, back off nut until both rear wheels turn freely.
16. Tighten attaching locknut.
17. Lower vehicle and verify parking brake operation.
