Brake Shoe: Service and Repair



Never replace brake linings (shoes) on only one wheel. Replace linings on both sides of axle assembly. Always replace linings with linings of the same make and grade.
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove brake drums as described previously.
3. Using a suitable tool, remove upper and lower spring.
4. Install attaching clip Fre. 05 or equivalent, onto wheel cylinder pistons.
5. Remove spring and adjusting lever.
6. Remove hand brake cable from lever.
7. Remove hold down spring and one brake shoe.
8. Remove self adjuster.
9. Remove other shoe hold down spring, then the brake shoe.
10. Using a suitable vacuum cleaner, dust out drums and backing plates.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. The internal components of the brakes are different for the lefthand and righthand sides. Do not interchange from side to side.
b. Lightly grease self adjuster threads and mark it right or lefthand.
c. The end the lefthand adjuster is metallic silver colored and has righthand threads.
d. The end of the righthand adjuster is gold colored and has lefthand threads.
e. Adjust brake shoes to 8.97-9.0 inch.
