Removal
Fig. 1 Typical steering column shift linkage installation:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then place alignment marks on intermediate shaft and gear for use during installation.
2. Remove flexible coupling nuts and disengage intermediate shaft from coupling.
3. On models equipped with column shift, disconnect shift rod from lower steering column shift lever.
4. Move seat as far rearward as possible, then remove lower finish panel or tube cover.
5. Remove package tray, if equipped.
6. Lift lock tab on steering column wiring harness wire connector and separate column harness connector from instrument panel connector.
7. Press lock tab on ignition switch wiring harness connector and disconnect harness from switch. On 1982 - 87 models, disconnect dimmer switch harness.
8. Disconnect cruise command wire connector, if equipped.

9. On models with column shift automatic transmission, disconnect shift quadrant pointer control cable from shift bowl.
10. Remove toe plate attaching bolts from dash panel.
11. Remove bolts attaching steering column mounting bracket to column. Column mounting bracket bolts are metric and color coded blue for identification.
12. Support steering column and remove nuts attaching steering column mounting bracket to instrument panel. Set bracket aside to protect breakaway capsules.
13. Remove column assembly from vehicle. If intermediate shaft is to be removed from column, place alignment marks on column and shaft for use during assembly.
