Filing Instructions

Information
The Twin Grip differential in some 1982-83 Concord and Spirit models may make a chatter noise when turning corners.
If this condition occurs, drain, flush and refill the axle with AMC axle lubricant plus four ounces of the axle lubricant additive outlined in this I.S. Note.
PROCEDURE
1. Raise the vehicle on a twin post or similar type hoist that will allow the rear wheels to rotate freely.
2. Remove the axle cover and drain the original lubricant. Wipe any remaining lubricant from the case, carrier and gears with shop towels.
3. Reinstall the axle cover and fill the axle with 3 pints (1.41 liters) of AMC axle lubricant.
NOTE: Do not install a gasket or apply Gasket-In-A-Tube to the cover at this time.
4. Flush the axle as follows-Start the engine, shift the transmission into Drive or high gear and operate the vehicle at a steady speed of 20-25 mph (on the speedometer) for 3 or 4 minutes. Do not increase or decrease speed rapidly and do not exceed 30 mph on the speedometer.
WARNING: Be sure that the rear wheels are clear of the floor before starting the engine and shifting into gear Also be sure that no one is standing near the rear wheels while they are rotating. Shift the transmission into neutral and stop the engine. Remove the axle cover and drain the lubricant. Wipe any remaining lubricant from the case, carrier and gears with shop towels.
6. Clean the axle housing and axle cover gasket surfaces thoroughly. Apply a thin bead of AMC Gasket-InA-Tube to both surfaces and install the axle cover. Tighten the cover bolts to 20 foot-pounds (27 N-m) torque.
7. Fill the axle with AMC axle lubricant plus four ounces of the lubricant additive, 89 83 100 003, and lower the vehicle.
NOTE: Do not use any more than four ounces of additive.
8. Drive the vehicle in a figure eight pattern to work the axle lubricant/additive mixture into the Twin Grip clutches. At least ten complete figure eight cycles are required to distribute the lubricant thoroughly.
