Steering Column: Description and Operation
DESCRIPTIONThe steering column used in this vehicle is a multiposition, tilt type steering column. It is manufactured by Daimler Chrysler Corporation.
The steering column used is an energy-absorbing design. This type of a steering column design allows the steering column to collapse in the event the vehicle is involved in a front-end collision.
The steering column has been designed to be serviced only as a complete assembly less the components listed below :
- Airbag module
- Clockspring
- Ignition switch
- Key cylinder
- Multi-function switch
- Tilt lever
- Trim shrouds
- Steering wheel
These aforementioned components can be serviced without the removal of the steering column from the vehicle. For additional information on the electrical components of the steering column, refer to their respective information.
OPERATION
Turning of the steering wheel is transferred through the steering column and intermediate shaft to the power steering gear. The gear then moves the steering knuckles, steering the vehicle.
The steering column has an antitheft provision. With the key/lock cylinder turned to the LOCK position, and the key removed, the ignition switch cannot be operated and the steering shaft (and steering wheel) cannot be turned more than 180 degrees before locking.
