Master Cylinder Disassembly and Assembly

NOTE: To replace the reservoir, remove the master cylinder from the power brake booster first. See Removal And Installation for the procedure.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Thoroughly clean the master cylinder housing and brake fluid reservoir.
2. Using a syringe or other equivalent tool, empty all brake fluid from the reservoir.

3. Using a pin punch remove the 2 roll pins retaining the brake fluid reservoir to the master cylinder.

NOTE: Do not pry off with tool, damage to reservoir may result.

4. While pulling upward on the reservoir, rock it from side to side to remove the reservoir from the sealing grommets.

5. Remove the master cylinder-to-fluid reservoir seal grommets from the master cylinder.

ASSEMBLY
1. Lubricate the NEW seal grommets for the fluid reservoir with fresh clean fresh brake fluid. Then install new housing-to-reservoir grommets in master cylinder housing.
2. Lubricate the fluid reservoir mounting area with clean fresh brake fluid. Place fluid reservoir in the correct position over the seal grommets. Seat the fluid reservoir into the master cylinder using a rocking motion while firmly pushing down on the fluid reservoir.

3. Make sure the fluid reservoir is installed on the master cylinder until the bottom of the reservoir touches the top of both seal grommets.
4. Using a pin punch install the 2 roll pins retaining the brake fluid reservoir to the master cylinder.

NOTE: It is not necessary to bleed the entire hydraulic system after replacing the master cylinder, provided that the master cylinder has been filled and bled prior to installation.

5. Bleed the master cylinder assembly prior to mounting it on the power brake booster. Go to Brakes Service and Repair for procedures.
6. Install the master cylinder on the power brake booster. See Removal And Installation for the procedure.
