Fig. 1 Rear Axle Shaft Assembly:
1. Remove rear axle shaft as shown, noting the following:
a. On models equipped with ABS brake system, remove rear speed sensor attaching nut.
CAUTION: Ensure speed sensor tip and toothed edge of rotor do not strike other parts, as damage may result.
b. Remove caliper assembly then suspend using suitable wire.
c. Using tool No. C 3281 or equivalent, secure axle shaft, then remove companion flange self-locking nut.
d. On models equipped with ABS brake system, using tool No. P 334 or equivalent, remove rear rotor from axle shaft assembly.
e. Using tool No. P334 or equivalent, remove outer bearing and dust shield assembly.
f. Using tool No. C 4171 or equivalent, remove inner bearing and seal from axle housing.
2. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Using tool No. C 4171 or equivalent, press fit inner bearing onto axle housing.
b. Using tool No. MB990641 or equivalent, press oil seal onto axle housing with oil seal depression facing upward, and until it contacts shoulder on inside of axle housing. Using suitable plastic hammer, lightly tap top and circumference of tool press fitting oil seal gradually and evenly.
c. Using tool No. MB990799 or equivalent, press fit dust shield until it contacts with axle shaft shoulder. Using suitable plastic hammer, lightly tap top and circumference of tool press fitting oil seal gradually and evenly.
d. Apply multipurpose grease around circumference of inner side of outer bearing seal lip.
e. Using tool No. P 334 or equivalent, press fit outer bearing to axle shaft, ensuring bearing seal lip surface faces axle shaft flange.
f. On models equipped with ABS brake systems, using tool No. P 334 or equivalent, press fit rotor to axle shaft with rear rotor groove toward axle shaft flange.
g. Using tool No. C3281 or equivalent, secure axle shaft, then tighten companion flange self-locking nut.
