Air Bag: Service and Repair

Warning: Before attempting to diagnose, remove or install any airbag system components, unless otherwise noted, you must first disconnect and isolate battery ground cable. Failure to do so could result in accidental deployment and possible personal injury.

Warning: If replacing a deployed module, wear gloves and eye protection. There will be deposits on and around the airbag that could cause skin and eye irritation. If material does come into contact with the body, flush with plenty of cold water.

Removal

1. Ensure front wheels are in straight ahead position. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable, and wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding.
2. Remove airbag module as follows:
a. Remove airbag module mounting nuts using a socket wrench from rear.
b. Disconnect clockspring connector from airbag module by pressing airbag lock toward outer side spreading it open, then gently pry connector out.
c. Airbag module should be stored in a clean, dry place with pad cover facing up. If airbag module is to be disposed of and it has not been deployed, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG MODULE DEPLOYMENT.
3. Remove steering wheel using appropriate steering wheel puller.
4. Disconnect the SDU (SRS Diagnostic Unit) as follows:
a. Remove rear console assembly.
b. Disconnect SRS from SDU (Supplemental Diagnostic Unit), using screwdriver to push in lock spring of lock lever. A double-lock connector is used, ensure care is taken as not to damage connector.
c. Remove the 2 pin red connector of clockspring SDU while pressing down the lock of the clockspring connector.

Installation

1. Prior to installation, check clockspring, airbag module, connectors, case and gear for damage. If clockspring or any other components, including connectors are damaged, replace as necessary.
2. Prior to installing clockspring, check resistance between No. 2 and No. 7 connectors using SRS check harness No. MB991349 and suitable digital volt/ohmmeter, refer to Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Procedures for procedure. Resistance must be less than 0.4 ohms. If not, replace clockspring.
