SUBJECT:
Difficulty Shifting Into Reverse
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH GETRAG TRANSAXLE ONLY.
MODELS:
1991-1992 (B7) Stealth
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
To correct customer complaints of difficulty shifting into reverse. The control lever assembly can now be serviced.
PARTS REQUIRED:
1 Control Lever Assembly MB896538
2 Bolts MB896946
2 Pins MB919000
Mopar Silicone Sealer Or Equivalent 04318025
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair involves replacement of the gear shift control lever assembly with a revised assembly.
1. With the ignition key in the OFF position, disconnect the battery.
2. Place the transaxle in neutral.
3. Disconnect the shift linkage, as outlined in the appropriate service manual.
4. Remove the selector lever assembly from the transaxle.
5. Remove the control lever assembly from the transaxle, see Figure 1.
NOTE:
THE NEUTRAL RETURN SPRING ON THE CONTROL LEVER CAN EASILY FALL OFF INTO THE TRANSAXLE WHEN REMOVING THE CONTROL LEVER. IF THIS HAPPENS, IT CAN BE REMOVED WITH A MAGNETIC SCREW DRIVER OR OTHER MAGNETIC TOOL.
6. Apply Mopar Silicone Sealer/or equivalent to the transaxle case attaching surface for the new control lever.
7. Install the neutral return spring onto the new control lever (use a small amount of wheel bearing grease to hold the spring in place).
8. Install the new control lever assembly on the transaxle, make sure that the control finger and interlock plate are properly aligned, Figure 2. Torque to 9.8 N-m (87 in.lbs.).
9. Install the selector lever assembly on the transaxle, torque to 17.64 N-m (156 in.lbs.).
10. Connect the shift linkage.
11. Connect the battery.
12. Ensure the vehicle shifts properly.
