Fuel Pump - Noise/Engine Power Loss

Improper Or Loss Of Fuel Pressure While Driving


MODELS:

1991-1992 (BB) MONACO

(Affects 1991 vehicles built after MDH 10-08-xx. These vehicles can be identified by an 8 in the twelfth position of the VIN).


SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Loss of fuel pressure or extreme fuel pressure fluctuation while driving. Some vehicles may encounter one or more of the following symptoms; fuel pump noise, erratic transmission shifting or engine power loss.


PARTS REQUIRED:

1 Fuel Pump Module 4720388


REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves the replacement of the fuel pump module with a revised one.

1. With the ignition key in the OFF position, disconnect the battery.

2. Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle as outlined in the 1991 Premier/Monaco Service Manual, Publication # 81-270-1140.

CAUTION: THE FUEL FILLER CAP MUST BE REMOVED TO RELEASE FUEL TANK PRESSURE PRIOR TO DISCONNECTING ANY FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENT.





3. Loosen the fuel pump module clamp, see Fig. 1.

4. Remove the fuel pump module from the fuel tank and replace with the revised fuel pump module, PN4720388. Discard the flat rubber seal. Transfer the fuel sending unit.

NOTE: PRECAUTIONS MUST BE TAKEN TO PREVENT DIRT AND OTHER FOREIGN MATERIAL FROM FALLING INTO FUEL TANK.


5. Lower the fuel pump module into the fuel tank. Rotate the module so that all the fuel and vapor tubes point to the right side of the fuel tank (when tank is installed in vehicle).

6. Compress the fuel module. Install band clamp and torque to 4.5 +/- 0.5 N-m (40 in.lbs.).

7. Install the fuel tank.

8. Connect the battery.
