Speed Control - Failure to Engage With Electrical Loads
NO.: 08-30-92GROUP: Electrical
DATE: Dec. 14, 1992
SUBJECT:
Speed Control Failure to Engage
MODELS:
1991-1/4 - 1992 (BB) Monaco/Premier
(Affects 1991 vehicles built after MDH 10-08-XX. These vehicles can be identified by an 8 in the twelfth position of the VIN).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
On some vehicles an otherwise fully functional speed control system may fail to engage when the headlamps or other electrical loads are present (high blower speed, radio, etc.).
DIAGNOSIS:
This condition can be caused by a gradual loss of the speed control switch ground circuit. Before proceeding with the repair procedure, use the DRB II (scan tool) and appropriate diagnostic procedure manual, verify that the vehicle speed control systems are functioning as designed (no fault codes are present).
PARTS REQUIRED:
1 1/4 inch Heat Shrink Tubing 4419644
1 1/4 inch Eyelet Terminal NPN
AR Non-corrosive Rosin Core Solder NPN
20 inches 18 Gauge Light Blue Wire NPN
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair involves grounding the speed control switches to cowl sheet metal.
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Locate black 48-way steering column connector at base of steering column. Locate 18 gauge light-blue ground wire in cavity C-3 -steering column side (female terminals). If necessary for access, disconnect connector by unscrewing bolt in center of connector.
3. Cut light-blue ground wire, strip back 3/4 inch of insulation on steering column side.
4. Strip back 3/4 inch of insulation from one end of repair wire.
5. Twist wire ends together and solder.
6. Slide 1/4 inch heat shrink over splice and heat tubing to seal splice.
7. Measure required length of wire to reach lighting module ground stud on left kickpad- just left of parking brake mechanism- cut wire to correct length.
8. Strip end of wire and crimp on 1/4 inch terminal. Solder ground eyelet at crimp.
9. Remove torque nut on lamp module ground stud. Place new ground eyelet on lighting module stud. Make sure new wire is routed clear of park brake mechanism and is securely in place.
10. Replace torque nut on lamp module ground stud- make sure that both lamp module ground (braided strap) and new eyelet are securely fastened, torque to 8.5 N-m (75 in.lbs.).
11. Reconnect steering column connector. Reconnect battery.
12. Verify speed control switch on/off operation with DRB II:
a. with panel lamps on, off, full, center and low intensity.
b. with various accessories on -i.e. blower, headlamps, cigar lighter, radio. . .
