Rocker Arm Assembly: Service and Repair

Replace rocker arms, rocker arm shafts and camshaft in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 54, noting the following:
1. Prior to removing rocker arms and shaft assemblies, install auto lash adjuster holder tool MD998443 or equivalent, to prevent adjuster from dropping out.
2. Inspect auto lash adjuster as outlined under ``Auto Lash Adjuster Inspection.''
3. Insert rocker arm shaft into front bearing so that notch on shaft faces upward, and insert the bolt without tightening it.

4. Install wave washer as shown ,Fig. 55.

5. Install bearing caps with their front marks pointing to camshaft sprocket side. Bearing cap No. 2, 3 and 4 look very similar, identify using marks shown in Fig. 56.
6. Prior to installing the auto lash adjuster, prime the lash adjuster as follows:
a. Immerse the auto lash adjuster in clean diesel fuel.

b. Using a small wire, move plunger up and down four or five times while pushing down lightly on check ball to bleed out air, Fig. 31.
c. Insert lash adjuster from below ensuring not to spill out the diesel fuel inside.
d. Install auto lash adjuster holder tool No. MD998443 or equivalent.
7. Use seal installer tool No. MD998306 and MD998307 to install the camshaft oil seal.
8. Apply sealant to the lower rounded edge of the semi-circular packing prior to installation.
