No. 446

To: All Chrysler-Plymouth and Dodge Dealers

Subject: Customer Satisfaction Notification #446 -- Radio Amplifier Failure

Models: 1998 Horizon and Omni (L-Body) Cars Equipped With Premium Cassette Radio (Sales Code RAN), Vehicle Build Dates From MonthDay-Hour (MDH) 05-19-XX (May 19, 1988) Through the End of the 1988 Model Year (MDH 07-14-XX)

Reference: E-Mail message of 1/19/89 on above subject to all Chrysler/Plymouth and Dodge dealers.

RAN Sales Code premium cassette radios in late 1988 model year Horizon and Omni can may experience amplifier damage due to incompatibility with the vehicle wiring. Such damage results in an inoperative radio which may also cause the radio circuit fuse to blow.

Note: The radio involved in this action was not installed in L-Body cars until late in the 1988 model year (May, 1988). It can be identified by the "joystick" used for speaker balance control rather than the slide control used on radios installed earlier in the model year. Only about 1,450 cars were built with the affected radio.

To prevent this failure -- or a repeat failure following radio replacement -- the wiring harness to the radio must be modified.

^ All subject vehicles still in inventory must be repaired immediately.

^ If this failure has already occurred on a subject vehicle, the wiring harness must be modified prior to radio replacement.

Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.
