SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Customer complaints of hard shifting or poor shift quality on subject model vehicles may be the result of an improperly adjusted select cable or shift cable.

Using the following adjustment procedure should resolve this condition.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Select Cable Adjustment Procedure

1. Place transmission shift lever in the neutral position (Figure 1).

NOTE: PLACING THE SHIFT LEVER IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION WILL ALSO PLACE THE SELECT LEVER IN NEUTRAL..
2. Disconnect shift cable and select cable at both ends, and check to be sure that each will operate freely without binding. If binding exists, check routing and replace cable(s) if necessary.

3. Reconnect both cables at transmission end.

4. Place gear shift lever in the neutral position (Figure 2).

5. Adjust the cable to the proper length as shown in Figure 3.
6. Reconnect cable at gearshift lever.

Gearshift Cable Adjustment Procedure

1. Move the transmission shift lever to the 4th gear position.
NOTE: IF THE SHIFT LEVER DOES NOT MOVE FREELY, DEPRESS THE CLUTCH PEDAL TO ASSIST.

2. Tilt the gearshift lever as shown in Figure 4 toward the 4th gear position, until it touches the stop.

NOTE: IT MAY BE ADVISABLE TO HAVE AN ASSISTANT HOLD LEVER IN THIS POSITION DURING CABLE ADJUSTMENT.

3. Adjust the cable to the proper length as shown in Figure 5.
4. Reconnect the cable at gearshift lever.

FIGURE 6:

5. Move gearshift lever between 3rd, neutral, and 4th gear positions. The shift lever to stop clearances (A) and (B) should be equal as shown in Figure 6.
6. If clearances (A) and (B) are not equal, readjust gearshift cable.

7. Verify proper shifting into all gears.
