Backing Plate: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure





1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
2. Remove the brake shoe components, including the parking brake with the retainer.
3. Remove the brake line and plug the opening in the line to prevent fluid loss or contamination.





4. Remove the wheel cylinder assembly.
5. Remove the wheel hub assembly.
5.1. Pry off the wheel hub cap (dust cover).
5.2. Remove the castle nut. Discard the split pin.
5.3. Disconnect the cable to the wheel speed sensor on the ABS brakes.
5.4. Remove the wheel hub and the bearing.
6. Remove the backing plate bolts and the backing plate.

Installation Procedure





1. Coat the backing plate with grease at the brake shoe contact points.
2. Install the backing plate with bolts.
Tighten the brake backing plate bolts to knuckle assembly to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the wheel hub and the bearing, and connect the cable to the wheel speed sensor on the ABS brakes.





4. Install the castle nut and the new split pin.
Tighten the brake drum castellated nut to hub to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.), then tighten another 1 Nm (9 inch lbs.).
5. Install the wheel hub cap (dust cover).
6. Install the brake wheel cylinder assembly to the backing plate.
7. Connect the brake line fitting.
Tighten the brake line fitting to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the brake components.
9. Install the parking brake cable with the retainer by attaching the cable to the brake shoe lever.
10. Bleed the brakes.
11. Lower the vehicle.
