Daewoo Motor America has acknowledged a noncompliance with FMVSS 201 (Occupant Protection In Interior Impact) that exists in all 1998~2001 Leganza models. In the event of an accident, there is a possibility of increased head injury to the front seat passenger should contact with the passenger side A-Pillar occur.
To meet the FMVSS 201 requirement, Daewoo is implementing a recall action where Daewoo Dealers are to remove both the Driver and Passenger A-Pillar Trim Panels and install an adhesive-backed pad material over the center portion of the A-Pillars before reinstalling the Trim Panels.
All affected vehicles in a Daewoo Dealer's possession (which includes Dealer inventory and vehicles in for service) and subject to this campaign must be held and repaired per the service procedure provided in this campaign bulletin before the vehicles are sold/delivered or returned to a service customer.
Daewoo Dealers are to provide this service to all customer owned (fleet and retail) vehicles subject to this campaign at "No Charge" to the owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, ownership, or original purchase/delivery location from this time forward.
Note:
Dealers should verify whether a particular vehicle has had the recall campaign completed previously by completing a "Campaign Inquiry" in the Daewoo DataLink System (DDS).
Current affected Leganza owners will be notified in writing and will be calling to schedule an appointment to have this modification performed to their vehicle.
In summary, all Leganza models subject to this campaign that are in your vehicle inventory, or that are in your Dealership for service in the future, must receive this campaign modification before being sold or prior to returning the vehicle to the customer after service.
A-Pillar Modification Procedure:
1. Raise the Hood and verify that the campaign has not been completed previously by checking for a punch mark directly to the left of the VIN which is stamped in the passenger side of the bulkhead.
2. Remove the Door Opening Weatherstrip by carefully pulling downward on the weatherstrip as shown.
Note:
Remove only enough of the Door Opening Weatherstrip to expose the A-Pillar Trim Panel.
3. Starting from the upper edge, remove the Passenger-side A-Pillar Trim Panel by carefully pulling it away from the A-Pillar until all three (3) retaining clips are released.
4. Carefully lift the A-Pillar Trim Panel upward to remove it from the Instrument Panel.
Note:
The A-Pillar Trim Panel has two (2) tabs that locate it into the Instrument Panel.
5. Remove the pad self-adhesive strip protective covering and position the pad on the A-Pillar, as shown.
Note:
The bottom edge of the pad should be aligned with the body radius and the notch in the pad should be centered around the center retaining clip slot.
6. Ensure that the retaining clips are still in their proper position on the A-Pillar Trim Panel, then carefully slide the bottom edge of the Trim Panel into the recess in the Instrument Panel.
7. Ensure that the retaining clips are aligned with their respective slots in the A-Pillar and firmly press on the A-Pillar Trim Panel until the retaining clips "snap" into place.
8. Reinstall the Door Opening Weatherstrip by pressing firmly into place.
9. Repeat this procedure for the Passenger-side A-Pillar Trim Panel.
10. Using a suitable Center Punch, carefully punch a small mark approximately 1/4 inch toward the passenger side of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) located in the center area of the bulkhead.
CAUTION:
Please ensure that you do not damage, deface or, in any way, alter the VIN stamped into the bulkhead.
11. Close the Hood and verify that it is securely latched.
