NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES WITH A 2.5 LITER ENGINE AND AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE BUILT PRIOR TO APR. 7, 1995 (MDH 04-07-XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Charging light "ON", ABS light "ON", or a no start. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) may or may not be present. Condition may be intermittent.
DIAGNOSIS:
Carefully inspect the wiring harness near the shifter lever of the automatic transaxle (Figure 1). If wire damage is detected, or the wires are protruding from the protective convolute, perform the repair procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
AR 4778570 Heat Shrink Tubing
AR NPN Rosin Core Solder
AR NPN Electrical Tape
AR 06149 3M Electrical Moisture Sealant Patch (Box) or 06147 Tape (Roll)
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves repairing any damaged wiring, checking for proper routing, and taping the convolute to prevent wire protrusion.
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly to gain access to the area.
2. If damage is not found, make sure the harness has at least 20 mm (3/4 in.) of clearance to the shifter lever. If required, re-route the wiring as necessary to increase the clearance. Wrap electrical tape around the convolute at the shift lever location to prevent the wires from protruding.
3. If the insulation of a wire is only chaffed, seal the section with 3M Electrical Moisture Sealant Patch, P/N 06149, or tape, P/N 06147. If the wire conductor is damaged, cut the wire and place a piece of heat shrink tubing, P/N 4778570, over the wire. Splice the wire together and solder the splice with rosin core solder. Shrink the tubing over the repaired area.
4. After the repair, place the wires back into the convolute. Wrap electrical tape around the convolute at the shift lever location to prevent the wires from protruding. Make sure the harness has at least 20 mm (3/4 in.) of clearance to the shifter lever. Re-route as necessary.
