SYMPTOM/CONDITION
High shift effort or gear blockage because of improper crossover adjustment.
DIAGNOSIS
With the engine off, engage the parking brake and depress the clutch pedal. Place gearshift in 3rd gear position. Make rapid shifts between 3rd and 2nd gear while applying a moderate (20 lb.) pre-load toward the reverse-neutral position. Place gearshift in 2nd gear position. Shift slowly between 2nd and 1st gear while applying a minimum crossover load toward reverseneutral (just up against 1-2 stop). Obstruction or total blockage of a gear in the above tests, after initial synchronizer line-up, indicates crossover misadjustment.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure outlines proper shift linkage adjustment.
1. Place transaxle in 1st gear.
NOTE: KEEP 1ST GEAR ENGAGED DURING STEPS 2-6.
2. Slide drivers seat full rearward and remove the carpet pad from the drivers side of the floor console.
3. Locate crossover cable adjustment screw through left side opening of console.
4. Loosen the adjustment screw until the shift lever is free in the crossover direction.
5. Push shift lever toward reverse until it contacts the reverse lockout device. Move the knob away from this position, toward 5th gear, approximately 1/8" (3 mm).
6. Tighten adjustment screw while maintaining the position of Step 5. Tighten adjustment screw to 55 inch pounds.
7. Replace the floor console carpet pad.
8. Repeat the diagnostic procedure to insure that the condition has been satisfactorily corrected.
